Institution Description
The autonomous non-profit organization "Russian International Olympic University" (RIOU) was founded on 21 October 2009 under the Memorandum of understanding between the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Organizing Committee "Sochi 2014" and the Russian Olympic Committee, and under the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation 774. The co-founders of RIOU are the Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), the Organizing Committee "Sochi 2014" and the Holding company "Interros".

The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin is a Chair of the RIOU Board of Trustees. 

RIOU activities focus on preparing highly qualified specialists in sports management for Russian and worldwide industry of sport, Olympic and Paralympic Movement. The University educational programmes cover the key directions of sports education: venue and infrastructure management, organizing competitions, mass communications, diplomacy and administration, as well as career management.

RIOU is a unique university which transforms olympic knowledge into educational products. It is the experience of staging such considerable sporting events as the Olympic Games that gives clear understanding of all the algorithms of modern managerial practice.

In 2010 RIOU started realizing educational programmes (more than 10) by orders of the Organizing Committee "Sochi 2014". Since 2011 the University has been conducting further training special courses for Russian regional sports leaders, "Olympstroy" staff and Sochi municipal employees.

The University is designed to have up to 500 students at the same time and the annual amount of graduates – to 2000 people on all forms of education.

Among RIOU teachers and professors – renowned Russian and international experts in sports management. The University is setting up the system of partnership with leading Russian and foreign universities. At the moment Moscow University of Industry and Finance, International Paralympic Committee Academy, World Sports Academy (Great Britain), the Autonomous University of Barcelona olympic research center, Kufstein University of Applied Sciences (Austria), Capilano University (Canada).

In 2011 RIOU launched a unique publishing programme which is developing in two directions: a quarterly edition of the popular science magazine "RIOU Vestnik" and publishing the series of memoirs, archive material, works on Olympic history and philosophy, as well as the best Russian and foreign books on different aspects of sports education.

At the moment the RIOU headquarters is based in Moscow, its subsidiary office being in Sochi. After the University campus has been built in 2013, its main activity will be centered in Sochi.

RIOU is a landmark, a significant project – the symbol of olympic legacy. RIOU alumni will be highly demanded in the structures of Russian and worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Movements, state and municipal governing bodies, sport federations and clubs, sports media, companies connected with producing sports goods, in sport marketing.
